In the southwestern region of the island, near the historic mining hub of Iglesias, lies the beach of Piscinas, famous for its massive dune system reaching heights of up to 60 meters. Beyond its stunning landscape, this site features a rare acoustic phenomenon known as “singing sand”. Walking barefoot along the shoreline or sand dunes produces a distinct, audible squeaking or humming sound. This physical effect is caused by the remarkable uniformity and spherical shape of the quartz grains making up the sand. Under the pressure of footsteps, the friction between grains accumulates and releases mechanical energy as sound waves. It is an exceptionally rare geological trait in the Mediterranean, more typical of vast continental deserts.
