In addition to its past as a prison island, Asinara holds a unique natural treasure: a wild population of native albino donkeys. These animals feature pure white coats, pink skin, and pale blue eyes due to albinism. Far from being artificially bred, these white donkeys are the product of natural genetic isolation that occurred on the island over generations. Their biological rarity has made them the official symbol of Asinara National Park. Today, these donkeys roam freely across the island under environmental protection.
