San Pietro Island, located off southwestern Sardinia, historically served as an international maritime quarantine station. Due to its isolated location near busy shipping lanes, authorities intercepted ships suspected of carrying infectious diseases. This health function shaped the island’s urban development around the natural harbor of Carloforte. The town was settled in the 18th century by Ligurian mariners arriving from the Tunisian island of Tabarka, preserving their unique Ligurian-Tunisian language, culture, and cuisine to this day.
