Soddì

  • Location and Geography: Soddì (Soddìe) is a small lowland village located in the central Guilcer region at an altitude of 250 meters above sea level. The municipal territory overlooks the nearby Lake Omodeo and features a gently undulating geometric profile with an intact, uncontaminated natural environment. Until 1979, Soddì was a hamlet of Ghilarza.

  • Etymology: According to linguist Massimo Pittau, the name has Sardinian or proto-Sardinian origins (indicated by final-vowel stress) and is linked to terms such as Tzodda or Ciodda, referring to threshing-floor remnants or a water-soaked site.

  • Economy: The local economy is primarily based on agriculture (cereals, forage, vines, and olives) and livestock farming (sheep, pigs, and horses). There is no industrial sector, and commercial services cater strictly to the community’s basic needs.

  • Historical Overview: Inhabited since the Nuragic period, Soddì belonged to the Guilcer curatoria within the Giudicato of Arborea during the Middle Ages. Following the Aragonese conquest, it passed through various feudal hands before becoming part of the Marquisate of Sedilo. Feudalism was abolished in 1839. Soddì was later merged into Ghilarza in 1927, re-established as an independent municipality in 1958, and assigned to the Province of Oristano in 1974.

  • Architecture and Landmarks:

    • Parish Church of the Holy Spirit (Spirito Santo): The main parish church of Soddì, featuring a gabled roof, an ocular window, a square bell tower with a cupola, and a courtyard featuring a hollow-trunk hackberry tree (Celtis australis). It hosts the Holy Spirit Brotherhood.

    • Church of Santa Maria Maddalena: Formerly a rural church, later incorporated into the northern edge of the village and restored decades ago.

    • Municipal Town Hall: Originally located on Via Torino, a new municipal office opened on Via Grazia Deledda in 2016.

  • Traditions and Festivals:

    • Feast of the Holy Spirit (October 15): The primary patronal festival of the village, featuring religious ceremonies and civil events.

    • Feast of Santa Maria Maddalena (July 22): Celebrated with a novena starting July 13, followed by a traditional statue procession, music, and dances.

    • Other local celebrations include the Feast of Saint Isidore on April 25, the Su Cazau cheese festival between April and May, and the Sos donos de Su lagu event in December celebrating Lake Omodeo.

  • Surrounding Nature and Archaeology:

    • Petrified Forest of Montigu Abile: Miocene-era fossilized tree trunks (including palms and baobabs dating back 25 million years) located within Soddì’s territory, submerged by Lake Omodeo and re-emerging during dry periods.

    • Nuraghe Sant’Anastasia: A single-tower (or multi-lobed) nuraghe situated on a plateau margin overlooking Lake Omodeo, featuring an incomplete tholos vault and adjacent traces of hut foundations.

    • Corridor Nuraghi (Crastu and Crastu II): Ancient megalithic corridor nuraghi with oval naviform chambers and surrounding structural walls located near Sedilo’s boundaries.
