Nurachi

Nurachi (elevation 6 meters above sea level, population 1,677 as of December 31, 2021) is located in central Sardinia, in the hinterland of the Gulf of Oristano on the western side of the island. Its municipal territory extends into the Sinis peninsula, encompassing wetlands adjacent to the Cabras Lagoon.

Region, Name, and Economy

  • Historical Region: Nurachi lies within the Campidano di Oristano, a vast southern-to-western plain formed by marine, fluvial, and volcanic sediments, historically belonging to the Giudicato of Arborea.

  • Raw Earth Association: The town is a member of the Associazione nazionale delle Città della Terra Cruda.

  • Origin of the Name: The name derives from the Latin toponym for the Roman station Annuagras or Ad nuragas (noted by the Anonymous of Ravenna), which evolved into the medieval Nurake (attested in the Condaghe of Santa Maria di Bonarcado) in reference to the ancient Nuraci de Pische nuraghe once located in its center.

  • Economy: The local economy is centered around agropastoral activities (cultivating cereals, vegetables, fodder, wine-producing vines for Vernaccia, citrus, and olives; and raising livestock) alongside a growing industrial sector and fishing in the Mare ’e Pauli lagoon.

History

  • Prehistory to Roman Era: Inhabited since the Neolithic period, the area later featured a trilobate nuraghe known as Nuraci de Pische. Under Roman rule from 238 BC onward, various funerary artifacts, lamps, and amphorae have been discovered locally.

  • Medieval and Modern Era: In the 11th century, it belonged to the Giudicato of Arborea (Curatoria of Campidano Maggiore) and was represented at the 1388 peace treaty between Eleonora d’Arborea and Peter IV of Aragon. It later entered the Marquessate of Oristano, became a Spanish royal fief, and was integrated into the Kingdom of Italy before being re-established as an independent municipality in 1946.

Festivals and Traditions

  • Carnival: Celebrated with Frituras (tasting traditional pastries like Zipulas, Is arrubiolus, Is culurgionis de lati, and Seadas) paired with Vernaccia wine.

  • June 1: Magasius Abetus, featuring music, songs, and wine tastings in the historic center’s cellars.
