The Campidano is the vast southwestern plain of Sardinia stretching between the Gulf of Cagliari and the Gulf of Oristano. Geographically, the Campidano di Cagliari represents its southernmost plain, centering around Cagliari, Quartu Sant’Elena, and surrounding northern and northwestern municipalities.
Overview of Monserrato
Monserrato is a municipality in the Metropolitan City of Cagliari, fully conurbated with the regional capital. Developed near the Molentargius lagoon and its salt pans, its economy features commercial networks, agriculture, and traditional food specialties.
Origins & History: In the Middle Ages, it was called Pauli or Paulli (“marsh”), later becoming Pauli Pirri and eventually renamed Pauli Monserrato and finally Monserrato in 1888 after the famous monastery of Montserrat near Barcelona, where a Black Madonna (Morenera) is venerated. The settlement’s foundation dates back to the Roman era. It suffered depopulation during the 1348 plague and subsequent Saracen pirate raids before being resettled in the mid-16th century. It was briefly annexed to Cagliari from 1928 until regaining full municipal autonomy via a 1991 referendum.
