Right on the doorstep of Cagliari lies the Molentargius Lagoon, a wetland nature reserve of high ecological value. During specific times of the year, the water in the former salt pans turns a vibrant shade of pink. This biological phenomenon is caused by high concentrations of microscopic algae and tiny brine shrimp (Artemia salina) rich in carotenoid pigments. This ecosystem serves as the primary feeding ground for wild pink flamingos, whose plumage turns pink as they feed on the shrimp.
