Off the rugged eastern coast of Sardinia, hidden beneath the turquoise surface of the Gulf of Orosei, lies one of the deepest and most complex submarine canyon systems in Italy. Just a short distance from golden, tranquil beaches, the continental shelf drops dramatically into abyssal trenches reaching depths of over 3,000 meters in the Tyrrhenian Sea. This sheer vertical drop creates extraordinary oceanographic conditions: the canyon walls channel nutrient-rich deep-water currents up toward the surface. This upwelling phenomenon feeds an exceptional marine biodiversity and turns the gulf into a favored corridor for pelagic wildlife, explaining frequent sightings of majestic cetaceans like fin whales, sperm whales, and dolphins close to the shore.
