Villaperuccio

Overview and Geography

Villaperuccio (Sa Baronia in Sardinian) is an agricultural municipality of 1,007 inhabitants located at 68 meters elevation in the Sulcis plain, near Lake Monte Pranu and the SS293 highway. Its territory varies from 43 to 480 meters above sea level.

The name combines Villa with Peruccio (from Tuscan Pieruccio, “Little Peter”). Locally called Sa Baronía, commemorating its historical tenure under the Barons of Otger.

Economy and Local Culture

  • Agropastoral & Artisanal Economy: Primary agricultural goods include wheat, vegetables, wine (Moscato, Carignano del Sulcis, Nuragus), citrus, olives, and livestock. Local crafts emphasize wicker basketry and fine wool weaving.

  • Festivals and Events:

    • Sagra dell’Arancio & Craft Exhibition (March): Orange and carpet craftsmanship fair.

    • Festa della Madonna delle Grazie (First Sunday of July): Celebrated in the Is Grazias hamlet.

    • Patronal Feast of the Madonna del Rosario (October 8 & 2nd to last Sunday of August): Procession featuring an 18th-century wooden statue.

History

Inhabited since the Neolithic era, evidenced by arrowheads, prehistoric menhirs (Luxia Arrabiosa, Is Pedras Crocadas), and the necropolises of Montessu and Marchianna. In the Middle Ages, it belonged to the Giudicato of Caralis (Curatoria of Sulcis), granted to Gherardo della Gherardesca in 1258. Decimated by the 1348 plague and Aragon-Arborea wars, it was granted to the Barons of Otger. Formerly a hamlet of Santadi (1853–1979), it regained municipal independence following a 1979 referendum.
