Nuragus

Nuragus (elevation 359 meters above sea level, population 841 as of December 31, 2021) is situated in the northern part of the South Sardinia Province, southwest of the Sarcidano plateau and northeast of the Giara di Gesturi.

Region, Name, and Economy

  • Historical Region: Nuragus is located in the Sarcidano region, which stretches between the Campidano and Barbagia territories.

  • Origin of the Name: The name is a Campidanese plural referring to the numerous nuraghi found throughout its territory—around 30 structures, including the rare hexalobate Valenza Nuraghe.

  • Economy: The hill town relies on agropastoral activities, notable for specialized sheep breeding genetics yielding high milk production, alongside crop cultivation.

History

  • Antiquity & Medieval Era: Inhabited since prehistoric times with numerous nuraghi and necropolises, it became part of the Curatoria of Parte Valenza in the Giudicato of Arborea during the Middle Ages.

  • Feudal & Modern Era: Following the 1409 Battle of Sanluri, it passed through various feudal families (De Sena, Enriquez, Castelvì, and Aymerich as part of the Marquessate of Laconi) until feudal abolition in 1839.

Festivals and Traditions

  • January 20: Festival of Saint Sebastiano, honoring the patron of livestock breeders with a community bonfire and orange collection.

  • April: National Sheep Market Show of Sardinian Breeds, where the traditional local pasta Is Tallarinus is showcased.

  • May 15: Festival of Saint Isidore coupled with the Sagra de Is Tallarinus.

  • July 5–7: Festival of Saint Elijah the Prophet (Sant’Allias), the town’s principal celebration held at its countryside church.

  • July 22: Patronal feast of Saint Mary Magdalene.

  • September: “Il nuragus a nuragus” food and wine festival celebrating the local Nuragus grape variety.

  • November: Sagra de Su Turroni de cixiri (chickpea and dried fruit torrone festival).

Exploring the Town Center

  • Disused Railway Station & Library: The former station building (active from 1915 to 1956 on the Isili-Villacidro line) has been restored to house the Luigi Matta Municipal Library.

  • Town Hall (Municipio): Located on Piazza IV Novembre.

  • Parish Church of Santa Maria Maddalena: Built between 1867 and 1869 in a late Aragonese-Gothic style, housing 17th-century baroque wooden altars and an 18th-century statue of Saint Elijah.

  • Carboni Boy Manor & Mill: Historic noble estate and an adjoining 20th-century Liberty-style mill-pasta factory complex.

  • Municipal Cemetery: Located along the southern exit towards Gesturi.

  • Sports Facilities: Features a dirt-pitch football field, a synthetic five-a-side pitch, and a multi-purpose gym.

Surroundings and Archaeological Sites

  • Valenza Roman Town (Valentia): Archaeological remains of an ancient Roman stronghold and staging post along the internal road connecting Càralis (Cagliari) and Olbia.

  • Coni Sacred Well (Pozzo sacro di Coni): A small, elegant nuragic well temple constructed from squared basalt blocks with a descending staircase, where the famous Matriarca in preghiera bronze figurine was discovered.

  • Santu Millanu Complex Nuraghe: A well-preserved tetralobate nuragic monument with a main central tower rising over six meters.

  • Aiodda Giants’ Tomb: One of the Mediterranean’s largest megalithic tombs, which uniquely incorporated reused anthropomorphic statue-menhirs featuring dagger and geometric motifs.
