Villaputzu

Overview and Geography

Villaputzu (Bidda Putzu in Sardinian) is a coastal municipality of 4,473 inhabitants situated at 8 meters elevation in the Sarrabus plain along the Flumendosa River mouth. Its hilly, varied territory includes Mount Perdosu and the Quirra islands.

The name (attested in 1523 as Villa Puzzu) derives from Villa and the Campidanese Puzzu (“Well”).

Economy and Local Culture

  • Agropastoral, Maritime, & Industrial Economy: Agricultural products include citrus fruits, wheat, vegetables, wine, and olives. Industrial sectors cover food processing, fish farming, footwear, paper, building materials, electric systems, and shipbuilding.

  • Launeddas Musical School: Villaputzu is historically celebrated across Sardinia for its prestigious school of launeddas (a polyphonic triple-pipe reed instrument played with circular breathing). The town hosts the annual Festival delle Launeddas on August 7.

  • Traditional Gastronomy: Features culingionis, malloreddus, pardulas, pabassinas, and casu marzu.

  • Festivals and Events:

    • Festa di San Giorgio Martire (May 15): Patronal festival with ox-cart (traccas) processions and launeddas performances.

    • Festa della Madonna del Mare (August 16): Car and sea procession transporting the Virgin’s statue from Santa Maria to Porto Corallo.

    • Festa di San Giovanni Battista (First Sunday of September): Held at Murerau.

History

Settled since Nuragic times, it corresponds to ancient Sarcapos, a Phoenician-Punic and Roman river-port trading center near the Flumendosa mouth. To escape Arab coastal raids from the 8th century onward, the village shifted inland. Medievally known as Villa Pupus, it belonged to the Giudicato of Caralis (Sarrabus Curatoria). Incorporated into the County (later Marquisate) of Quirra under the Carroz, Centelles, and Osorio de la Cueva families, feudalism was abolished in 1839. Portions of its territory have hosted the Salto di Quirra Interforce Military Range since 1956.
