The Historic Region of Meilogu (Logudoro Meilogu)
During the medieval period, the Logudoro was one of the four Giudicati of Sardinia, with capitals successively at Porto Torres, Ardara, and Sassari. The region is divided into three parts: Logudoro Turritano (the Sassarese) to the north, Logudoro Meilogu to the west, and Logudoro Montacuto to the east. The name Meilogu derives from Mediu logu, meaning “in the heart of the Giudicato”.
The municipalities belonging to Meilogu are Ardara, Banari, Bessude, Bonnanaro, Bonorva, Borutta, Cheremule, Cossoine, Giave, Ittireddu, Mara, Mores, Padria, Pozzomaggiore, Semestene, Siligo, Thiesi, and Torralba. The territory is predominantly flat, producing cereals and vegetables, and features thriving sheep farming with a rich dairy production supported by numerous springs and watercourses.
The Municipality of Bessude
The municipality of Bessude (elevation 447 meters above sea level, population 391 as of December 31, 2021) is situated on a hill at the foot of Monte Pelau, positioned distinctively between the Logudoro and Meilogu plateaus. It lies just four kilometers from the SS131 Carlo Felice bis highway. The municipal territory is rich in watercourses and springs, with an irregular geometric profile ranging from 324 to 695 meters above sea level.
Origin of the Name
Attested since 1341 in forms like Versute, Versutta, and Versuta, scholars suggest the name may originate from the Phoenician Beth Tzud (“Fortified House”). Another interpretation links it to a legend about a small stream (Su Rio de Mesu Idda) that once crossed the town, meaning the settlement stood between the two banks (Bis Undas).
Economy & History
-
Economy: Based on agriculture and livestock, producing cereals, vegetables, fodder, vines, olives, citrus, and fruits. Industry and the tertiary sector are sparsely developed.
-
History: Inhabited since prehistory (prenuragick and nuragic remains, including the San Teodoro nuraghe), the current town dates back to the 13th century within the Giudicato of Logudoro (curatoria of Meilogu), later passing to the Doria family and Don Giacomo Manca under Aragonese rule. Popular discontent against feudal burdens sparked an anti-feudal uprising in 1800.
