Perched dramatically on a cone-shaped volcanic hill rising 256 meters above the surrounding plains near Siliqua (just 30 minutes from Cagliari), Acquafredda Castle (Castello di Acquafredda) is one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in southern Sardinia. Dating back to the 13th century and famously associated with the noble Count Ugolino della Gherardesca (immortalized in Dante’s Inferno), the castle offers a challenging hike rewarded by stunning panoramic views over the Cixerri valley.
