The winter Carnival of Mamoiada is one of Europe’s most captivating and mysterious pagan rituals. It is dominated by iconic, striking figures: the Mamutones—heavy men draped in black sheepskins carrying up to 30 kilograms of echoing bronze cowbells strapped to their backs, wearing dark, agonizing wooden masks—and their counterparts, the Issohadores, who wear bright red jackets and capture spectators with ropes in a ritualistic gesture of good fortune.
