Overview of Lotzorai
Lotzorai is an agricultural and seaside tourist center situated on a fertile coastal plain between the Pramaera River and the Girasole Rio. Its economy spans cereal and citrus farming, olive oil production, livestock rearing, and summer tourism.
Origins & History: The name Lotzorai is of Paleo-Sardinian origin, likely signifying a “place of blooming almond trees”. Inhabited since pre-Nuragic and Nuragic times, the area hosted a Phoenician-Punic and later Roman port (Sulpicius Portus). Medieval Lotzorai belonged to the Giudicato of Cagliari within the Ogliastra curatoria. It was heavily fortified by the Visconti of Gallura, who built the Castello dell’Ogliastra (later called Castello di Medusa), which fell to Aragonese forces in 1323. Under Spanish rule, it was incorporated into the County and Marquisate of Quirra until 1839.
