Loculi and the Baronie Region

The Historical Region of Baronie

The Baronie (Sa Baronìa) spans northeastern Sardinia, comprising the southern portion of the medieval Giudicato of Gallura. Following Aragonese rule, the southern barony (Baronia di Galtellì e Orosei) was established in 1448, encompassing villages along the Cedrino valley.

Overview of Loculi

Loculi (Lòcula in Sardinian) is an agropastoral borgo situated in the central-eastern province of Nuoro, nestled in a hilly zone within the Cedrino River valley. Its economy centers on traditional agriculture and livestock rearing.

Origins & History: The name is attested from 1342 as Loculo, likely deriving from the Latin Loculus (“small place” or “small village”) or Locus (“sacred grove”). Inhabited since prehistory (evidenced by local nuraghi and a 1959 find of Sard-Punic bronze and silver jewelry and coins), medieval Loculi belonged to the Giudicato of Gallura within the Galtellì curatoria, later passing under Aragonese rule into the Baronia of Orosei.
