Overview of Genuri
Genuri is a small agricultural village located in the northern part of the South Sardinia province, set against the southwestern slopes of the Giara di Gesturi plateau and north of the Marmilla hills. The village is crossed by the Rio Saduru (originating from the Giara as the Rio Bolanti). Its economy is anchored in agropastoralism, producing cereal grains, legumes, olive oil from centuries-old groves, and traditional sweets like Gattòu, Amarettus, and Pani ’e Saba.
Origins & History:
The name stems from the Paleo-Sardinian linguistic layer, likely combining Genna (“gate” or “pass”) and Urus (“bull”). Inhabited since ancient times (attested by destroyed nuraghi like Santu Marcu), Genuri belonged to the Giudicato of Arborea in the Middle Ages within the Marmilla curatoria. During the Aragonese and Spanish periods, it was included in the County of Quirra under various noble houses (Moncada, Carroz, Centelles, Borgia, Català, Osorio) until feudal redemption in 1839.
Key Sites & Cultural Highlights:
- Parish Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary (Natività di Maria Vergine): Documented since the 15th century under the title of Santa Maria de Monserrat, it features a 16th-century core, a 1628 expansion including a stone dome, and a mid-20th-century nave oriented perpendicularly to the original structure.
- Church of San Domino: A 15th-century country church (now incorporated into the western outskirts) housing a bell cast in 1408 and serving as the focal point for the August 6th Transfiguration festival and Donkey Palio (Palio degli Asinelli).
- Olive Oil Museum (Museo dell’Olio d’Oliva): Housed in a restored 19th-century traditional Campidanese estate, preserving ancient stone millstones (maciye), decanting jars, and old agricultural tools.
- San Marco Nuragic Complex: Located on a basaltic hill north of the town, comprising the ruins of a complex multi-towered nuraghe and surrounding settlement remains that show continuous reuse through Punic, Roman, and Late Antique periods.
